Trier is Germany’s oldest city, founded as Augusta Treverorum under Emperor Augustus in 16 BCE.
It lies on the Moselle River, about 10 km from Luxembourg, and is composed of 19 municipal districts ranging from central neighborhoods to wine-producing suburbs such as Olewig and Ruwer/Eitelsbach.
The city’s Roman past is visible in nine UNESCO-listed monuments and major churches like the Cathedral of St Peter and the Church of Our Lady. Visitor activity peaks between May and October during the Moselle river cruise season, while the annual Christmas Market draws crowds in late November to December.
